Are you a delicate orchid or a dandelion?

Many children can thrive in any environment, while others may flourish only under the most favourable conditions. New findings reveal the complex interplay of factors that creates "dandelion" and "orchid" kids.

Today when I found myself in yet another conversation about mental health, a middle-aged man, who experienced numerous adverse childhood events (ACEs), asked me why some kids growing up in abusive environments flourish while others languish?

My reply was that research shows that approximately 1 in 5 of our offspring is born highly sensitive to environmental cues. They are like canaries in the coal mine. Their hyper-vigilance helped ensure the survival of the tribe in a hostile environment.

According to research conducted by pediatrician W. Thomas Boyce M.D, within any given population of children, a small minority—about 20 percent —will suffer the majority of all illnesses and disorders.
