Happy new beginnings

“I've had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.”

Mark Twain

January seems like the right time to commit to doing something new. For me, in 2021, it will be a weekly blog that may inspire hope where there is despair.

Every morning we have the opportunity to start anew - to change self-limiting thoughts and beliefs, to overcome fear and worry, to focus on what is right in our lives, and to radiate a beam of light where there may be darkness.

I recognize the magnitude of fear and suffering COVID has caused in many of our households. It is catastrophic. Collectively we feel the pain.

And without a doubt, we have experienced an unprecedented amount of change in our lives.

Change, good or bad, uses up resources. Recovery time is needed.

Fortunately, the Public Health physical distancing policy has facilitated a much-needed pause and reset for society - an opportunity to recharge, reflect, and recalibrate.

But it has also caused a lot of fear. As an acronym, fear has been referred to by some as fake evidence appearing real, leading us to forget every available resource. I am not implying that COVID is fake. But in the media, if it bleeds, it leads. While the news coverage can mobilize needed change, listening to mainstream media daily can be immobilizing for some.

So what can we do today?

Gratitude and love are great antidotes to fear.

Perhaps this is the time to start practicing an attitude of gratitude. Write down 3-5 things we are grateful for daily. Show love through a random act of kindness when the opportunity arises.

Although it may sound callous, suppose we also ask ourselves, why is this happening for us, as opposed to, why is this happening to us? And what can we do today to make it better?

Now that is an empowering way to move forward - to create a better normal.

Happy new beginnings to all.
