Live each day as if it's your last?

What you focus on expands.

~ T. Harv Eker

This week I was shocked to hear that one of my cousins passed away suddenly.

As we reflected on our loss, one of my siblings beckoned us to enjoy each day as if it were our last.

Although I appreciate the encouragement, I wanted to reword it.

Careful what you focus on

Your time is limited. Don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

~ Steve Jobs

Every day of his adult years, Steve Jobs thought about how he should live it if it were the last.

He also believed that time is limited. Although he accomplished more than most of us ever will in a lifetime, sadly, he died in his mid-fifties.

Thoughts about my cousin

What is lovely never dies, but passes into other loveliness, Star-dust, or sea-foam, flower or winged air.

~ Thomas Bailey Aldrich

When I was younger, I aspired to age as well as my late cousin. She was thirteen years older than I and, in midlife, was the picture of health.

She had a beautiful family and home and had assimilated into the Canadian culture flawlessly.

I clearly remember her radiant glow at our wedding. When she entered a room, all eyes were on her.

The last time I saw her, roughly ten years ago, it became clear that she had become uncomfortable with the aging process and was attempting to turn back the clock. She was not embracing the future.

May she have found peace.

Closing thoughts

Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.

~ Benjamin Franklin

If our thoughts, words and beliefs manifest our outcomes, becoming aware of potentially self-limiting tendencies may prevent grief.

Benjamin Franklin’s advice that we not put off until tomorrow what we can do today resonates with me better than live each day as if it were your last.

Live and learn.
