Moving helps develop character

Updated: Sep 11, 2023

The more you practice tolerating discomfort, the more confidence you'll gain in your ability to accept new challenges.

~ Amy Morin

A move can be both exciting and intimidating.

Just a quick look at a moving checklist may be enough to discourage the faint of heart.

As those of you who regularly read my blog know, we in my immediate family have moved a lot over the last few years.

Our daughter moved last week

You can choose courage, or you can choose comfort, but you cannot choose both.

~ Brené Brown

Our daughter and son-in-law moved last week. The house they moved into is a new build with some unfinished projects in progress.

Moving is especially challenging when renovations or a new build are involved.

Having demanding full-time jobs, the expectation of a second child in half a year, and a 16-month-old starting Montessori school this week, they have much to manage.

I spent the week helping out.

When unexpected, unfortunate events happened, such as:

  • the internet provider failed to deliver when they both work from home, and

  • on one of the hottest days this summer, the air conditioner ceased to function,

having someone to prepare meals, tidy up, and prioritize the care of the toddler meant our daughter and her husband could effectively fight fires as they arose.

It is a tough balance trying to decide how much to do and let do. But, with children in their formative years, alleviating some of mom and dad's stress is best for all.

Circumstance does not make the [person]; it reveals [them].

~ James Allen

Our granddaughter goes to school

Certainly, young children can begin to practice making letters and numbers and solving problems, but this should be done without workbooks. Young children need to learn initiative, autonomy, industry, and competence before they learn that answers can be right or wrong.

~ David Elkind

On a positive note, our grandchild, who loves to learn, has adjusted quite well to her new school, now fully subsidized by the Canadian government.

The trick was finding a spot.

Thankfully, our daughter is very organized and forward-thinking.

Mom and dad will have peace of mind this fall, knowing their child is well cared for and safe, while learning French, music, yoga and more. She is the youngest child in the school. The teachers already love her.
