A few years ago I was inspired to do an exercise that would clarify my dream job, core values, mission and vision for the future.
Using a template found at Manifest Your Potential website I came up with the following:
'My dream job is work where I get to use my gifts and talents of seeing possibility where others may only see problems, writing about and noticing emerging trends and empowering people with the knowledge to: eat well, live well and create demand for a more sustainable health care system.
I get to fulfill my life calling of health coaching and work in inspiring places such as schools, community at large, health care and other organizations.
Surrounded by the people I love to work with, like-minded people who care about our children and revere elders, politicians who aspire to create sustainable change and researchers conducting leading edge, independently funded studies on health and wellness, I solve the problems I love to work on such as malnutrition, sustainable food production and preventative healthcare.
My workday is filled with amazing experiences, such as helping people “get it” and have “aha” moments, inspiring others to vote with their fork and to reframe stress and challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation. I get to use my favourite things including presentation tools, research databases, books, blogs and videos.
I am able to live the life I want, where I can be part of the solution, help to create a more vibrant community, while enjoying a more rewarding social life, with sufficient time to nourish and nurture my family optimally.'
Using what I learned from the book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey, I then identified my core values, mission and vision as follows.
CORE VALUES
Growth through lifelong learning
Family
Integrity
Compassion
Wisdom
Advocacy
Health
MISSION STATEMENT
To share with people lessons and resources that will inspire them to live well to feel better.
VISION
Sustainable, functional health care, that addresses underlying cause of disease and emphasizes prevention.
If every decision I make, and every action I take is congruent with my core values, mission and vision, then I’m living my life with purpose.
Sometimes this has meant walking away from lucrative job opportunities. I realize this is a privilege, often not available until later in life.
