What, how and when we eat matters

Updated: Mar 4, 2021

High quality food provides the building blocks for a healthy mind and body.  But how and when we eat also matters.  Even the healthiest meal eaten mindlessly, in haste and/or late in the day can be harmful to health.

Eat food made from whole, naturally produced ingredients.  Include lots of colourful vegetables, berries, herbs and spices.

Proper digestion and absorption of this food starts with thoughtful food preparation. Preparing our own meal actually sends the message that we are worthy of nourishment.  That belief alone favourably alters how we process the nutrients provided.

Food eaten with gratitude nourishes body and soul.  A lot of hard work goes into producing high quality, nutritious food.  Voting with our fork and choosing these higher quality foods, will increase supply and reduce cost, making it more accessible to all.

Chew every bite. Mahatma Gandhi said: “Chew your drink and drink your food.”  The act of chewing facilitates the production of enzymes that help break down food into pieces our body: recognizes; is less likely to react to; and can use for maintenance. Chewing food to liquid-like consistency, means less digestive power is needed, leaving one feeling more energetic and sparing digestive enzymes for other body processes, including break down of scar tissue or even any tumour.

Eating most of our food earlier on in the day, when we have the most digestive power, and can actually use it to fuel our daily activity, means we are less likely to store that food as fat.  During sleep our body should not be metabolizing food.  To function optimally the next day, it should be self-cleaning, repairing tissue, creating memory and producing the right hormones to regulate blood sugar and prevent cravings.

Take home:

Eat food lovingly prepared from whole, colourful, naturally produced ingredients. Chew every bite mindfully and gratefully. Eat most of that food earlier on in the day.

Daily habits matter.  Eat well. Live well. Feel better.
