We teach best what we most need to learn.
~ Richard Bach
Playing the role of caregiver comes naturally to me.
Reflecting, I realize that I derive a sense of self-worth from fostering well-being in others.
Laudable as that may sound, assuming the role of caregiver can create dependence in relationships.
The road to co-dependency is often paved with good intentions, but it can ultimately lead to an imbalance of power and a loss of personal autonomy.
Recognizing that I interfere with personal growth and transformation in those who become dependent on my services motivates me to commit to giving the greatest gift of all - agency or self-sufficiency.
I can help create personal agency by inspiring, guiding, and teaching others to develop skills, values, and goals to thrive.
Sometimes, I have to remind myself to do less to accomplish more.
